On my fourth and final day in Charlotte, North Carolina, I took a 90-minute ride north of the city to the Yadkin Valley American Viticultural Area, where I visited two incredible wineries. I had no idea North Carolina made wines! Come along with me as I explore this hidden gem.

My first stop in the Yadkin Valley was to Raffaldini Vineyards, which was founded in 2001 and sits on a beautiful 102 acre estate in the North Carolina countryside that reminded me of Tuscany. I tasted their dry, sparkling white wine; a dry white wine blend called Liguria; a dry Rosé called Girasole; four dry red wines including their Bella Misto, Sangiovese, Montepulciao Riserva, and Il Falco; and their Meditazione dessert wine. I really enjoyed all of their wines and got to take a Raffaldini Vineyards glass home as a souvenir!
Before leaving Raffaldini, I stopped by their barrel room, where I got to see the barrels the wines are aged in, learned about Raffaldini’s aging process, and tried some more wines straight from the barrels. The best wine experience I’ve had in a long time! I felt like I was back in Italy!

Next, I drove another thirty minutes to Shelton Vineyards, the largest family-run winery in North Carolina, for a wine tasting and some dinner! I took a quick tour of their vineyards, fermentation room, and barrel room, and learned about the 10 different grapes that are grown there and the various wines that Shelton produces.
After trying their 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon straight out of the barrel, 2017 Sauvignon Blanc, 2015 Tannat, 2017 dry Rosé, 2017 Bourbon Barrel-Aged Chardonnay, a Burbon Barrel-Aged red blend, and a 2014 Port, I went to the Harvest Grill restaurant on their estate and had a delicious dinner of smoked trout dip, seared duck breast with risotto and broccoli, and a Tannat.
