In 1832 Louis Roederer inherited the winery from his uncle. He was a man with ambitions and he renamed the estate after himself in 1833. When he took over the estate he also decided to buy more vineyards and it is thanks to this strategy that Louis Roederer winery is today one of Champagne’s biggest landholders. He also decided to go after export markets for his Champagnes that became more and more popular. He began to export wine to the USA in the 1870s and became very successful at the Imperial Court of Russia. For Tsar Alexander II the winery created in 1876 what many call the first prestige Cuvée in Champagne: Cristal. The Cristal bottle still pays homage to history. The Tsar was scared to be assassinated and he, therefore, asked for the bottle to be clear so that he could see the liquid and make sure there is not bomb or poison inside.
